A. Eugene Wasik

WILLIAMSTOWN - A. Eugene Wasik passed away on October 13, 2024, at the Jack Byrne Center for Palliative and Hospice Care. He was born April 23, 1936, in Rutland, Vermont to Albert and Sophia Wasik. Gene was staunchly proud of his Polish heritage and enjoyed speaking Polish, traditional foods and was an excellent polka dancer. He attended West Rutland High School and maintained lifetime friendships. He served in the U.S. Army, attended Boston University to become an undertaker, then Castleton College to earn a degree in Education. He earned his M.A. of Education at the University of Alabama (Roll Tide!). He worked as a teacher at Mt. Holly and Proctor, as a guidance counselor in Melbourne, Florida and then the Montpelier school system until he retired. Gene was happiest playing golf with his wife Kathy (especially when in South Carolina avoiding Vermont winters), spending time with and supporting his grandchildren Parker and Avery, mowing his lawn, watching sports and loving his very good dog, Kit. He wished he could have had more time with grandsons John and Alex. Survivors are daughter Mary Jean Wasik (Rob Howland), son Peter Wasik, grandchildren Parker Howland (Caroline), Avery Howland, John Wasik and Alex Wasik, brother Henry Wasik (Blanche) and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Kathryn A. Wasik, son Mark Wasik, brother Francis Wasik and sisters Jane Wysolmerski and Marie Hamlin. There will be no calling hours. A private burial service will be held at the Veteran’s Cemetery at a later date. The family would like to express deep gratitude to the nurses of DHMC Level 4 Wing A for their excellent care of Gene. There are no words to convey our deepest gratitude to the staff of the Jack Byrne Center for the level of kindness, concern and care they exhibited in helping all of us through Gene’s final days.
