BARRE-Andrew John Popailo was born on May 22, 1990, in Long Branch, New Jersey, the son of Dennis and Shirley Popailo and brother to Joseph.
He spent his youth in Belford, NJ, but moved to Vermont at just 16. Despite the lack of a high school diploma, he went on to work through the ranks at various restaurants attaining head chief at an Irish pub and well-known steakhouse. Being a hard worker wasn’t his best trait, though that was his love and dedication to family which tied for first place with his wonderful sense of humor.
At 25 years old, he survived a traumatic brain injury including multiple strokes that resulted in him suffering a 2 weeklong coma. Beyond all the doctors’ expectations he woke from the slumber however he was partially paralyzed. Not willing to stay down and having the benefit of strong medical and familial support, it was mere months before he could walk again. Throughout his whole recovery, he spent so much more time laughing with family and friends than dwelling on what he’d lost. Unfortunately, on December 4th, 2025, after showing cold symptoms for merely a couple of days, Andrew joined his mother in heaven due to having emphysema and pneumonia which contributed to the development of a severe lung infection that also spread to the heart. It was a horrible combination which remained without any distinguishing symptoms long enough to become lethal.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Andrew’s life and share memories that reflect his humor, strength, and love. The opportunity to see him will be on Monday, January 19, 2026 from 1-4pm at Pruneau-Polli Funeral Home, 58 Summer Street in Barre. Though we grieve his passing, we take comfort in knowing he is at peace and that his light will continue to shine through those who loved him.
