Charles R. Pilbin

CABOT - Charles “Charlie” Roy Pilbin, 80, of Cabot, Vermont, passed away at his home on Monday, September 7, 2026, doing what he loved doing “cutting firewood.”

Charlie was born on April 8, 1946, in Northfield, Vermont, the son of Harold Pilbin and Eva Avery Pilbin.

Charlie was a hardworking man who took great pride in his work. In his younger years, he worked at Chubb Clark’s Sawmill in Lower Cabot. He then worked for 18 years on the farm of Charles and Barbara Carpenter. Charlie later joined the Cabot Road Crew, where he worked for 30 years before retiring.

Charlie was a familiar and much-loved figure throughout the Cabot area. He loved riding the back roads, visiting with people, and stopping to chat with friends and neighbors. He never seemed to be in a hurry and always enjoyed taking the time to catch up with those he encountered along the way.

An avid woodcutter, Charlie was also known for cutting firewood and providing many local families with their yearly supply. He was dependable, hardworking, and always willing to lend a hand.

During his later childhood, Charlie went to live with Spencer and Helen Wheeler and their four children, Robert, Linda, Roger, and Larry. Over the years, the Wheeler children became much more than friends to Charlie—he considered them his brothers and sister, and they considered him part of their family. Robert passed away in 2017, and Larry passed away in 1987.

Charlie was predeceased by his sister, Ruth Ann Pilbin Nutting, who passed away on December 10, 2009.

Charlie will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his love of the back roads, his many friendships, and his willingness to help others. He was a familiar presence in the Cabot community for many decades, and his passing leaves a noticeable absence in the places and among the people he knew so well.

With Charlie’s passing, an era comes to a close. He was part of a generation and a way of life that valued hard work, neighbors helping neighbors, stopping along the back roads for a visit, and being there when someone needed a helping hand. Charlie lived that way every day. His life was woven into the history of Cabot and into the lives of the many people who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed, but the memories of Charlie, his stories, his kindness, and his familiar presence will remain with those who had the privilege of knowing him.

There will be no calling hours or funeral services. A celebration of Charlie’s life may be held at a later date.
