Obituary

WASHINGTON-David A. Johnson, 55, of Washington, Vermont, passed away on February 9, 2026, at home with family and close friends around him, after a long battle with cancer — a fight he met with unwavering determination, pursuing every treatment option available, including traveling to Dana-Farber in Boston in the hope of a miracle.

David was born on July 15, 1970, in Springfield, Massachusetts. He was a devoted husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend whose life was marked by hard work, loyalty, humor, and deep love for his family.

He was married to the love of his life, Tammy Johnson of Washington, VT. David and Tammy first dated in their teenage years before going their separate ways, each marrying and raising children. After both later divorced, they found their way back to one another and reunited to build the life they were always meant to share. They were married on September 8, 2018, beginning a cherished chapter filled with love, laughter, and true partnership.

David was a proud father to his two sons, Carl Johnson of Graniteville, VT, and Adam Dolan of Plattsburgh, NY. He was also a loving stepfather to Amanda Emerson, Lorisa Campbell, and Ryan Holt, whom he cared for as his own.

His greatest joy in life was his seven grandchildren, who meant the world to him and brought him endless pride and happiness.

David was a true Vermonter through and through — proudly “redneck” in the best sense of the word, happiest outdoors, working hard, and living life on his own terms. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, snowmobiling, riding his ATV, and fishing, as well as spending time with his buddies and close friends. A hardworking man with a hell of a sense of humor, David had an easy way of making people laugh and lifting the spirits of those around him. He was the most loyal kind of friend, someone you could always count on, no matter the circumstance.

David shared especially close bonds with his friends Jeremy Jacobs, Todd Duff, and Brian Ritch, friendships built on loyalty, laughter, and years of shared memories. He also held close the memory of his dear friend Randy Bishop, who preceded him in death and remained forever in David’s heart.

David was employed for many years by Asplundh Tree Experts and Green Mountain Boring, where he was known for his strong work ethic and dependability. In recent months, he worked part time for Poulin Auto and Duranleau Construction, continuing to stay active and do the work he enjoyed.

He is survived by his siblings, Grace Gilbert, Christine Fassett, and Bennie Johnson, as well as his many nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved deeply and remained closely connected to throughout his life.

David was predeceased by his mother, Esther Phillips; his stepfather, William Phillips; and his biological father.

A celebration of life will be held on March 14 from 2:00–6:00 p.m. at the Canadian Club, located at 414 E. Montpelier Road, Barre, Vermont. Family and friends are invited to gather, share memories, and celebrate David’s life.

David will be remembered for his strength, his humor, his unwavering loyalty, and the deep love he had for his family and friends. While his passing leaves an immense void, his legacy lives on through the memories, laughter, and love shared by those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Arrangements are in the care of Pruneau-Polli Funeral Home in Barre. Those wishing to express online condolences may do so at: www.pruneaupollifuneralhome.com
