BARRE – Deborah A. Martin passed away peacefully on February 10, 2026, at the St. Johnsbury Center for Living and Rehabilitation, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s related dementia. She faced her battle with resilience, strength and grace, with family by her side. Throughout her battle she never lost her sharp wit, entertaining the residents and staff with spirited remarks and an occasional eyeroll.
Deborah was born December 12, 1944, in Weymouth, Massachusetts to Archibald and Evelyn Grassick. She graduated from Weymouth High School. She married Paul David Martin in 1964, and they had two sons, David and Scot. They later divorced and she moved to Vermont to be near her cousin, Anne Allinson, and her family. She worked as a waitress at several local restaurants while she attended Champlain College, obtaining an Associate’s Degree in Accounting. She worked as a bookkeeper at Martin’s Food Store, followed by a long career working as the assistant to the business agent of the Granite Cutter’s Union, where she made several life-long friends. She finished her career working at the State of Vermont Department of Labor, retiring in 2012.
Deborah enjoyed reading, especially Nora Roberts, cooking, crafts and sewing. She enjoyed morning coffee with her friends at local restaurants and loved shopping, always looking for a great bargain (she never found a coupon she couldn’t use). She also volunteered on several local political committees within the City of Barre and was a Justice of the Peace for many years, enjoying the chance to perform marriages for local couples. She loved Dachshunds, having several throughout her life. She was very proud to be a blood donor, donating gallons of blood over the years.
Survivors include her children, David and his wife Christine of Barre, Scot and his wife Kathy of Naples, Florida and her grandchildren who she adored, Katelyn Martin of Boston, MA, and Justin Martin, his wife Brittany and their son Paxton of North Ferrisburgh. She also leaves her beloved dog Sophie, as well as extended family.
We would like to thank the staff of Lincoln House in Barre and the staff of St. Johnsbury Center for Living & Rehabilitation for their kind and patient care.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday, February 15, 2026, at Pruneau-Polli Funeral Home from 2:00-4:00 pm.
A graveside service to honor her life will be held in the spring.
Arrangements are being made by Pruneau Polli Funeral Home – 58 Summer St, Barre, VT.
