BARRE-Edythe Sheridan (Boomhower) Garbacik, formerly of 26 Franklin Street, Barre, Vermont passed away on July 7, 2026 at Woodridge Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Berlin, VT. She always asked to be called “Sherri”.
Sherri was born May 30, 1942 in Great Neck, NY to parents William Boomhower and Edith Healy Boomhower. Her mother died when Sherri was an infant and her father died when she was 6. Sherri was raised by her grandmothers, Helen Healy and Virginia Boomhower. She attended schools in Great Neck and graduated from Great Neck North High School.
Sherri studied interior design at Montreat Anderson College in North Carolina, then went on to study at the University of Vermont, where she met Theodore “Ted” J. Garbacik. On December 2, 1967 she married Ted at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Waitsfield. In 1971, Ted and Sherri made their home in Barre and became involved with community and school affairs. Sheri was a member of St. Monica Church, sang with the choir and volunteered at the St. Vincent Thrift Shop. She was both a Boy Scout leader and a Girl Scout leader as well as a hockey mom while her children were growing up. Many will remember Sherri as a volunteer camp counselor during several summers at the Friendly Beaver Day Camp in Berlin. Sherri had a lifelong love of horses and dachshunds. Sherri enjoyed reminiscing about working as an exercise rider at a racetrack on Long Island when she was a teenager as well as spending time traveling in Venezuela during her college years.
Sherri is survived by her five children: Joel Garbacik and his wife, Corrina of South Barre; Tadeusz “Tad” Garbacik and his wife, Caitlin of Rochester, NY; Heather Savickas and her husband, Eric of Calhan, CO; Nicolaas “Nick” Garbacik of Berlin; Gretchen “Gubby” Garbacik and her husband, T.J. Thomas of Jackson, WY; ten grandchildren: Teagan Rich, Brandon, Tessa, Taylor, Arleigh and Heydan Garbacik; Connor, Devin and Corey Savickas; and Autumn Thomas and three great-grandchildren: Slade, Calliope and Kalista Rich. She is also survived by her sister, Suzanne Lopez of New
Mexico; and many nieces and nephews. She will be missed dearly by them as well as numerous extended family members including Patti and Bill Pusey and their children of Brattleboro. Sherri is predeceased by her parents, her sister, Barbara A. Wadleigh and her grandson, Oaklyn Garbacik.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on July 24, 2026 at St. Monica Catholic Church, 79 Summer St. Interment will follow the Mass at St. Sylvester Cemetery located at 22 Websterville Rd. Following the burial, a reception will be held at the Elks Club at 10 Jefferson St. All three of these locations are in Barre, VT.
