Irene S. Hayes

BARRE- Irene Stephenson Hayes, 95, passed away peacefully at home on Dec. 21, 2023. Irene was born in Burlington , VT on Oct. 30, 1928 to the late Sanford Stephenson and Mary (MacKinnon) Stephenson. Known as “Stevie” she graduated from Williamstown High School in 1946 as co-Valedictorian. The subject of her graduation speech was the need for taking care of wounded veterans. In high school she was known for her smile and considered the best dancer by her classmates. In April 1946 Irene married Laurence W. Hayes of Williamstown. Irene and Larry moved to CA in 1952, then to OR in 1966 then back to their beloved VT after retiring. Irene was an active member of the Macedonia Baptist Church of Plainfield for many years. She said the joy of her life was knowing Jesus and now she is dancing in heaven reunited with loved ones. Irene’s parents Mary and step-father, Wales Irish were hired by Doctor L.
