Lorraine A. Copping

Marshfield - Lorraine A. Copping 94 formerly of 86 Hollister Hill Rd, Marshfield VT. Resided from 2015 – 2025 at Heaton Woods in Montpelier, VT, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of November 9, 2025. She spent her last day in the loving presence of her children Dale and David Copping and Pamela Biron.

Born July 5, 1931, in Barre she was the daughter of the late Albert and Ida Abbaitti of Barre, VT. She grew up in the North End of Barre which she declared on many occasions, including to a caregiver a few days prior to her passing, it was the best end of Barre.

On March 24, 1951, she married the love of her life and best friend Richard A. Copping in the Methodist Church in Barre, VT. Richard finished out his term in the US Navy in 1953 and the two resided in Barre until he finished the completion of their home in 1959 in Marshfield where they lived happily for 56 years, raising their family.

Lorraine attended graded school and high school in Barre, Vermont. She worked for National Life full time until the birth of her daughter Pamela on October 12, 1967. She then became a stay-at-home mom until Pam was old enough to know the ropes and then worked for the State of Vermont Tax Department part time for about 20 years.

Holiday events happened in our parents’ home where mom would cook and entertain everyone until the end of the day when the serious business of playing cards would commence. She was a serious player who taught her grandchildren to be little card sharks. Friends and neighbors would always stop by for a drink, a game, a sandwich and pie. When the first non-family car was parked in the yard that was the signal that the game and libations were on!

Our parents had many friends in the Marshfield, Plainfield and Barre/Montpelier area and were active in the community. Always being a very social couple, they hosted parties, danced at Coles Pond Casino, the Canadian Club and wherever else the music might be. They were avid snow mobilers and campers starting with tents, then moving on to pop ups, and then to a 5th wheel camper which they used to travel all over New England and Northeast Canada. When our dad retired at 63, they spent about 14 years on the road anywhere from 3 – 6 months. They visited friends across the United States. They saw all the states except for Alaska and Hawaii. They had a permanent site for several years In Randolph at Able Mountain Campground where they enjoyed the company of their friends, family, potluck dinners, cocktails and of course the daily card games.

Our mom was actively involved in various organizations including Eastern Star, Home Dem, Red Hats Society, and the Rug Hooking Club, to name a few. She was also a member of both the Montpelier and Twin Valley Senior Centers.

Throughout her life mom had many special friends, too numerous to mention but you know who you are. One that needs to be mentioned is her best friend, Ruth Fowler. She was 1-day older than Ruth and Ruth never let her forget it. They were tied at the hip and had many, adventures over 70 years. Thank you, Ruth, for the many memories shared with our mom. She loved you like a sister.

The family would like to thank the kind and generous staff at Heaton Woods for making her a valued member of their community and taking care of her through her final hours. Also, to the staff at CVHHH who visited and cared for her in her final days.

Survivors include Dale Richard Copping of Jeffersonville, VT, David Robert (Pete) Copping and his wife Pauline (Sammy) of Plainfield, VT and Pamela Dee Biron of East Montpelier, VT as well as three grandchildren Ryan David Copping and wife Julia of Huntersville NC, Bradley Joseph Biron and partner Amanda Gibson of Cabot, VT, and Katelyn Elizabeth Tellier-Biron and wife Katey of Manchester, NH and two great grandsons Jordon Ryan Copping (NC) and Wilder Anthony Biron (Cabot) and a step great granddaughter Meilani Grace Antonucci (Cabot). She is also survived by a special nephew, Vincent Abbaitti of the Villages FL.

Lorraine was predeceased by her husband Richard A. Copping, her father Albert Abbaitti, her mother Ida Abbaitti, and sisters Vivian Abbaitti and Edna Slora. She was also predeceased by her loving son-in-law Anthony E. Biron.

There will be no calling hours. A private funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 15th, and there will be a burial at the Plain Mount Cemetery in East Montpelier, VT.

A remembrance gathering will be held at the home of her son David (Pete) Copping and wife Pauline at 718 Upper Rd, Plainfield, VT on Saturday November 15th at 2:30 PM.
