WAITSFIELD - Trish was born in Wales and was educated at home until she was nine years old. She spent her next years at a boarding school in England where she graduated at age 17. As her country was deep in the throes of World War II, she found herself drafted into the service. Not wanting to wear a uniform, she instead chose work in a government office in London.
In the later years of the war, there were not bombs but instead doodlebugs (a primitive type of drone) and rockets. Trish was injured, but not seriously, by a doodlebug. She continued to live in London until she was thirty.
Trish came to visit friends in the United States, where she applied for a visa and was surprised to be offered a green card. She lived between the two countries for a time and travelled often.
Trish worked in New York City as an editor for a men’s magazine, where also wrote a column, answering readers’ questions under a male pseudonym. This led to freelance writing on a wide range of topics; popular medicine, UFOs, healthy living, travel, interviews with famous stars, and much more. Her favorite movie star was Michael Caine, who she found brilliant as well as charming.
In 1975 she moved to Vermont and became active in anti-pesticide advocacy. She started Waitsfield Citizens Against Toxic Sprays, which prevented Green Mountain Power from using what would become banned herbicides under their lines. She later worked against pesticides, fungicides, and insecticides on crops and food.
Trish continued to be active even at age 100, attending events, taking weekly trips to libraries, and going to eat and drink with friends. She was often on the go seven days a week! After she stopped driving at age 97, she crafted a network of her many friends, as well as the amazing folks at Free Wheelin’, all of whom she relied on to take her to her many activities. She truly appreciated her friends immensely!
Trish leaves her cousin Lucy McCulloch and her husband Ian of London, England.
There will be no service, but Trish asked if anyone wanted to make a donation in her name they might consider Free Wheelin’ which she depended on. (Free Wheelin’, PO Box 132, Waitsfield, VT 05673)
Trish was a strong force with deep convictions. Bless her memory.
