ST. JOHNSBURY - Tonya Lynn Wheeler, 57 years old, peacefully passed away on April 26, 2026, in St. Johnsbury Community Living and Rehabilitation Center, St Johnsbury VT, due to complications from lifelong disabilities.
Tonya was born in Rutland Vermont, 12/23/1968 to Anne Elizabeth Russell. She came into life with profound disabilities, yet, was resilient and a bright light to all who knew her.
Tonya was placed out of the home when she was 3 years old and resided in Brandon Training school as well as the Achievement Center and foster homes. She moved in with her brother Blaine Russell and his wife Wanda (Handy) in 1995. She continued to live with Wanda, who cared for her as her own and provided experiences that gave Tonya the opportunity to live a beautiful life beyond her limitations. In 2021, she moved in with Robert and Florette Dorr who cared for her and loved her like she was a true part of their family. The Dorr’s provided structure and routines and she transitioned well and had an extraordinary quality of life. Tonya enjoyed horseback riding, swimming, swinging, listening to a variety of music, going for van rides in her community and being with family.
Tonya was a true ray of light and full of love. She had a smile that stayed with you for days. She was well known for reaching out for hugs and if she really loved you, she gave you a little pinch.
Tonya was predeceased by her mother Ann Russell on April 17, 2026. She is survived by her siblings Shelly Dumas, Rutland Vermont; Dawn Hicks, Tuscaloosa AL, Bernie Wheeler, Boiling Springs SC; Mike Wheeler, Rutland, VT; Lori Fermin, Rutland, VT; Blain Russell of Clarendon, VT; Wanda Handy of Sneedville, TN; and her aunt and uncle Bob and Honie King of Rutland, VT.
